The Vineyards

Spread along 600 vertical feet of a sun-washed western slope of the Mayacamas range, our 100+ acre Amapola Creek ranch borders the highly acclaimed Monte Rosso Vineyards. The red, basaltic volcanic soils we share with our esteemed next-door neighbor have yielded superb wine for well over the last century. The rhyolitic soils from our China Wall Vineyard add a firm tannin structure to the French clone Cabernet Sauvignon vines planted there in 2000. All 20 acres of our mountain estate vineyards are CCOF (California Certified Organic Farmers) certified organic. Three of our four estate blocks, China Wall, Bob Cat Run and Fox Trot Meadow, were the sources for our 2007 Cabernet Sauvignon. Using grapes from these three distinct micro climates and soil profiles allows master blender Richard to showcase the diverse terroir of our vineyards.

The Vintage

Beginning with below normal rainfall, the 2008 growing season had an extended April frost and was followed by a mild summer and fall temperatures with no precipitation. Temperatures were ideal through June, with only a few hot days over 100 F˚. When heat returned in late August it was not extreme and most of September was mild with adequate humidity. Berry size was small, and combined with the lighter yields, resulted in excellent quality fruit with fully ripe flavors and mature tannins.

 The Wine

Our 2008 Cabernet Sauvignon has an elegant beginning on the nose of rich cherries, black fruits and cassis aromatics with elaborate dark chocolate and cedar flavors. The fruit show lovely density and richness, expressing our estate mountain fruit through the elongated ripe fruit flavors. The mouth feel is plumb, round and concentrated with plush acidity sweet vanilla and toasted oak. The very long finish has a touch of dark chocolate cherries flavors wrapped in fine tannins.

Drink now or hold for the next 10 years.

2013 Cabernet Sauvignon, Sonoma Valley, Amapola Creek Estate Vineyard

Arrowood deserves a lot more credit than he often gets for his Cabernet Sauvignons, which are long-lived. Some of the early Château St. Jean Cabernet Sauvignons have stood the test of time, and those made under the Arrowood label, especially his Reserves, are 30+ year wines at the minimum. The 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate, which is 94% Cabernet Sauvignon and 6% Petit Verdot, is brilliant. Notes of graphite, crème de cassis, blueberry and blackberry along with some espresso are all present in this dense, full-bodied wine with great fruit, beautiful purity and moderately high tannins. There are just under 1,600 cases. This wine ideally needs another 2-3 years of bottle age and should drink well for 25-30 years. - Robert M. Parker, Jr., The Wine Advocate, Issue #223, March 2016
