Our Grenache and Syrah are organically grown on a small parcel of land located 900 feet above Sonoma Valley on a sun-washed western slope of the Mayacamas Mountains. Bobcat Run takes its name from a large resident feline that treats us to an occasional sighting. This block is part of our 100-acre ranch, which borders and shares red, iron-oxide volcanic soils with our neighbor, the highly acclaimed Monte Rosso Vineyard, a source of superb wines for well over a century. A site ideally suited for growing Grenache and Syrah, Bobcat Run lies in a fairly cool hollow open to the southwest, and its rows run north/south for good sun and warmth without excessive exposure.
In 2013 we were fortunate to have had such a great harvest on the heels of the excellent 2012 vintage. The growing season could be described as perfect. The weather was as good as one could expect. The growing season began early, with a warm and dry spring, and the weather stayed absolutely beautiful all the way through an early harvest. The quality and quantity of the fruit were exceptional.
The 2013 Cuvée Alis (66% Grenache, 22% Mourvèdre and 12% Syrah) opens in the style of the great Rhône wines of France that are made from the same varieties; subtle at the start, with a slow build towards an exquisite display of aromatics. At the front of the nose you will notice a gentle note of kirsch liqueur with a very subtle hint of lavender and pepper. Take a few moments with the glass, and you will see the aromatic profile begin to develop dramatically, with notes of big, bold, ripe summer berries. Take a sip, and you will find dark black cherries wrapped up in a full, round body of silky tannins. Note the depth of the fruit character on the palate; this is a multifaceted wine that redefines itself again and again over the course of a glass. Drink it over the next 5-6 years.
This blend is named for Richard’s wife and co-proprietor, Alis Demers Arrowood, the true love of his life.
